05-Araçá do campo - Psidium guienense (MYRTACEAE)

​

Shrub or small tree with smooth bark. Opposite leaves, somewhat similar to those of guava, with leather texture and oval shape, oblong or elliptical, of about 8 x 5 cm, with fine hair on the bottom. The flowers have five petals, are white and fragile, and contain 150 to 200 white and prominent stamens, arranged in the axillae of the branches, with one to five flowers. The fruit is an ovoid berry, yellow when ripe and with the appearance of a small guava, approximately 3 cm long, sweet, acidic and juicy, very aromatic, with pulp full of hard seeds.

 

Distribution: Common plant in South America, registered from Argentina to Mexico, occurring in typical cerrado, open field and cerradão physiognomies.

Situation in São Paulo: Reasonably present in fragments of cerrado, sometimes forming communities of these shrubs.

How to plant:

​

Uses: It is a quality wood plant, although fine, used in making cables and domestic and agricultural instruments, in addition to being a source of tannin for tanning hides. Best known for its delicious fruits for fresh consumption and for traditional use in the form of jellies, pulps and soft drinks.
